Mobile Cloud Computing Growth and Midsize Firms

This post was written as part of the IBM for Midsize Business program, which provides midsize businesses with the tools, expertise and solutions they need to become engines of a smarter planet.

Mobile cloud computing is on the rise as more consumers use mobile software and apps. The usage is expected to bring the market to new heights, and midsize firms are taking part in that growth.

Adapting Apps

Thanks to social media, the popularity of various apps and the need for instant navigation, the mobile cloud market is gaining speed. CloudTimes referenced a ReportsnReports survey titled, "Mobile Cloud Market by Application (Gaming, Entertainment, Utilities, Education, Productivity, Business & Finance, Social Networking, Healthcare, Travel & Navigation), & By User (Enterprise User, Consumer) — Worldwide Market Forecast and Analysis (2014–2019)," and noted that the mobile cloud market is increasing as mobile users are adapting its applications and services. The report predicted that the hybrid cloud market will hit $79 billion by 2018, which is a compound annual growth rate of 30 percent over a five-year span.

As a result of the market growth, there are more devices on the market and more vendors are introducing new apps and services to fill the demand. Data security remains the big concern among all segments of firms and consumers. Cybercriminals are often a step ahead, looking to infiltrate and target the latest mobile apps. In response, firms are spending more on security for mobile solutions like smartphones and tablets.

New Interaction, New Concerns

Mobile solutions open up new ways to interact with customers, employees and partners. It is a 24/7, convenient and easy-to-use tool, and the right app can build intimacy with a desired audience. IT professionals at midsize firms that embrace mobile cloud do so to increase productivity. However, they understand that increased mobile access also increases security risks. As a result, sound data use policies are necessary to keep corporate data as safe as possible.

When it comes to mobile apps, midsize firms have to juggle the challenges of managing and delivering mobile apps. There may also be a knowledge gap. Due to limited resources and manpower, midsize companies may not have the skills to develop mobile apps. This is where reliable partners can come in to help meet their IT demands.

Growth and Innovation

The mobile cloud computing market is quickly gaining momentum thanks to the convenience provided by the mobile cloud apps and services, and the increased use of smartphones and tablets. Consumers and firms alike are contributing to the growth. Midsize firms in particular are partnering with knowledgeable vendors to ensure their investment into mobile cloud is on the right path, one that is secure and optimized to increase productivity.
